Does The Following Have a Following?

Kevin Bacon surprised a lot of people when he announced that he was taking a break from films to focus on a cable television series. Titled “The Following,” Kevin Bacon would star as a broken FBI investigator haunted by his dealings with a serial killer and the aftermath of the arrest. You can find The Following on Fox but if you have a television provider like www.CableTelevision.net you should be able to DVR it or find it in the Guide.

It’s been more than two weeks now – well into the beginning of the Following and some people have to ask:

“Does The Following have a following?”

Are people into it and will it last past a first season?

The response to this question has been mixed to positive. While response and reception to Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy – the anti-hero and Hannibal-like characters respectively – have been unanimously positive, some people aren’t quite sure about the approach.

As a crime procedural, which if done like all the others is a dime a dozen, The Following is quite baffling. What seems like uninspired and slow sleuthing is quickly bookended by imagery of intense and extreme gore – even for Fox.

What’s even more shocking is the handling of the violence, portrayed in earnest and unmitigated detail. There are no pithy one-liners or humorous responses to trivialize the violence – it’s all there in horrifying detail.

About the only thing more shocking than the violence is the fact that it may be the one thing that keeps the show alive. Say what you will about people and morality but The Following is like a train wreck – people will want to look away but they can’t.

If you don’t believe me then see it for yourself. If you are a fan of Silence of the Lambs or the BBC classic Luther, you won’t be disappointed.

The Golden Girls was a great story-telling show that addressed real life situations in a very humorous manner. The characters were cast perfectly with each actress portraying their role brilliantly.

Blanche Devereaux played by Rue McLanahan was a man-happy senior citizen on a fixed income that took in four roommates to help with everyday costs of living. Betty White who played the dimwitted Read more…
